"Miniatures 2" is the long awaited follow up to the 1980 "Miniatures" album, which was both critically and commercially well received. The new album (released April 2000) has been compiled by Morgan Fisher and is a fascinating collection of 60 new tracks, all no more than 60 seconds long. Contributors on the album include Gavin Bryars, Hugh Cornwell (Ex The Stranglers), Lol Coxhill, David Cunningham, John Fiddler (Ex Medicine Head), Robert Fripp (Ex King Crimson), Howard Jones, John Paul Jones (Ex Led Zepplin), The Levellers, Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Terry Riley.

DAGMAR ANDRTOV * CZECHOSLOVAKIA
Female singer/guitarist with extraordinary Slav passion. Uses bowing techniques and effects to create orchestral sounds from her acoustic guitar. TRACK 16: A Little Orchestra Of Disaster And Hope BAKA BEYOND * U.K. British duo who have become well-known for blending their field recordings of the Baka pygmy tribe with contemporary world music rhythms. They display a more artistic and authentic approach than the famous French duo (Deep Forest) who are doing similar work. TRACK 29: Timeless PHILLIP K. BIMSTEIN * U.S.A. From punk rocker to mayor of a city is quite a jump, but Phillip has made that leap. As a mayor he is very involved with environmental concerns. As a musician he is now creating a rich blend of warm yet contemporary orchestral music and the spoken words of the people in his area, from venerable farmers to spiritual Native Americans. TRACK 18: Garland Hirschi's Cows GAVIN BRYARS * U.K. One of England's foremost modern orchestral composers. Has composed for jazz bass legend Charlie Haden and the English National Opera. In 1995 he released "Jesus' Blood never Failed Me Yet", the acclaimed album (featuring U.S. singer Tom Waits), from which he has edited a one-minute miniaturere. TRACK 35: Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet CHRIS BUTLER * U.S.A. A writer of alternative rock hits, Chris is also one of the only musicians recording on 1940's wire recorders. His song "Devil's Glitch" is in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest single ever recorded - 69 minutes. A one-minute edit has been made for this album. TRACK 55: Have A Nice Century! JANE CAMPION * NEW ZEALAND One of the most successful female film directors in the world, Jane's films have been praised for their sensitivity and intelligent psychology. Michael Nyman scored her prizewinning film "The Piano". TRACK 59: Passionless Moments BJ COLE * U.K. Long renowned as the most innovative pedal steel guitar player in the world. Has recorded versions of Satie and Debussy and worked with most of the leading rock/pop musicians, in particular John Cale. TRACK 10: Newgrange Aeon Fragment HUGH CORNWELL * U.K. Was guitarist/vocalist/leader of the renowned punk rock band The Stranglers, and is now a successful solo artist. TRACK 5: 2000 Lights LOL COXHILL * U.K. For thirty years soprano saxophonist Lol has been an eccentric hero of the British free jazz movement, working regularly with other jazz stars such as Derek Bailey and Evan Parker. TRACK 52: Six To Four DAVID CUNNINGHAM * IRELAND Experimental composer who had a #1 hit as Flying Lizards with an avant-garde version of "Money". Producer of several albums by Michael Nyman. TRACK 22: Oxalis DAVID DARLING * U.S.A. Unique avant-garde cellist who has recorded for ECM Records and scored films by Wim Wenders and Jean-Luc Godard. TRACK 51: Introspection THE DEEP SEASON * U.K. Four-piece rock band who are well-known in the British alternative scene. They write songs with a conscience, and are destined to be big. TRACK 45: Theme For The Peaceful Revolution DISSIDENTEN * GERMANY Techno/house musicians specialising in dance remixes of traditional Indian music. Recently collaborated with Gary Wright (of Spooky Tooth) TRACK 27: Light Of Love MAMADOU DOUMBIA * MALI Guitarist and ethnic instrument player (kora, ngoni) with African star Salif Keita and others, now blending Asian and African music in his electric and acoustic bands. TRACK 31: Qui Sait? JOHN FIDDLER * U.K. Leader of the #1-hit acoustic duo Medicine Head, who were heroes of the underground music scene in Britain in the early 70's. His intelligent, heart-fuelled songwriting style and voice have been compared to John Lennon. TRACK 39: Another 21st Century Day DANIEL FIGGIS * IRELAND One of the new breed of Irish avant-garde composers, artfully blending traditional folk music with minimalist electronics and lo-fi computer processing. TRACK 44: Fail Better MORGAN FISHER * U.K. Producer of this album (and the 1980 "Miniatures" album), Fisher started in 1968 as organist with The Love Affair (a #1-hit pop band) then played rock with Mott the Hoople and Queen. In 1984 he moved to Japan and now creates ambient music and film scores, and works with many of the leading Japanese musicians as player / composer / producer. TRACK 49: Flowers Of Silence ROBERT FRIPP * U.K. Britain's most radical rock guitarist, leader of King Crimson. Has played with Brian Eno, Talking Heads, David Bowie. TRACK 20: Blast CHÉNG GONGLIANG * CHINA Music professor at Nanjing College of Arts. Leading performer on the Qin (Chinese 7-string koto) - the instrument he plays is an historic artifact constructed in AD 215. TRACK 38: Ghu Zu Jun THOMAS DE HARTMANN * RUSSIA (1885-1956) Composer who was musical assistant to the eminent middle eastern mystic George Gurdjieff (1877-1949). TRACK 42: De Hartmann Music CHRISTOS HATZIS * CANADA Produces dramatic radio collages (orchestral/ethnic/computer music) for C.B.C. with Inuit (native Alaskan) music often a featured element. TRACK 28: Hunter's Dream HEAT WAVE * JAPAN One of Japan's finest rock groups, producing rich, emotional music that blends the rock power of Tom Petty, the intelligent lyricism of Dylan and the Celtic beauty of Irish folk music. TRACK 46: Takeda No Komori Uta JEAN HOUSTON * U.S.A. International advisor on human development, has lectured at the United Nations and authored several books on world cultures. His erudite, spiritual commentaries are backed by music from Jamaica's foremost reggae/dub musicians. TRACK 7: Atoms And Stars JOHN PAUL JONES * U.K. Bassist/keyboardist with rock giants Led Zeppelin. His recent activities have included arranging strings for R.E.M. and an avant-garde album with singer Diamanda Galas. TRACK 2: It's Coming (A Fanfare For The Millennium) TOKIKO KATO * JAPAN One of Japan's best-loved female singers who crosses musical borders, blending chanson, ethnic music and modern technology. Has worked with leading European musicians and is a champion for the causes of ecology and for minorities such as the "Ainu" people. TRACK 58: Toorina KOTO VORTEX * JAPAN Young female koto (Japanese horizontal harp) quartet specialising in modern music with flamboyant performances. TRACK 57: Snow TALITHA MACKENZIE * SCOTLAND Singer specialising in the extraordinary Gaelic puirt-a-beul (mouth music), adding synthesizers and dance rhythms. She was a member of the acclaimed duo Mouth Music. Their music blends the lyricism of The Chieftains with the spirit of the Mediterranean and has been heard all over the world in numerous films, art exhibitions and masterful recordings. TRACK 48: Come Saw Stayed WOLFGANG MITTERER * AUSTRIA Organist/composer specialising in radical playing techniques to produce avant-garde glissandos and harmonics from a traditional church organ. TRACK 17: Solo No. 3 KAZUFUMI MIYAZAWA * JAPAN Singer/songwriter and leader of The Boom, one of Japan's most creative rock bands, whose music blends influences from Indonesia, Jamaica and Latin America. Wrote the million-selling "Shima Uta", a song based on the folk music of Okinawa. TRACK 8: One Minute Blackout MEREDITH MONK * U.S.A. Guggenheim Award-winning singer and pianist whose minimal, yet emotional, works cross the boundary between avant-garde jazz and contemporary classical music. Is also a dance choreographer and film director. TRACK 13: Panda Chant II MOONDOG ( LOUIS HARDIN ) * U.S.A. Legendary blind 80-year-old composer who pioneered minimal music in the 60's and in recent years specialised in beautiful, complex canons. TRACK 56: Cosmicode SAINKHO NAMTCHYLAK * TUVA (MONGOLIA) One of the only female overtone singers; has collaborated with free jazz and ambient musicians in Russia and Europe. TRACK 14: Last Christmas NASTYA * RUSSIA Female rock singer/songwriter with emotional power and modern sense; her music can be compared to Sting and Fleetwood Mac. TRACK 40: Islands MICHAEL NYMAN * U.K. Modern orchestral composer who scored several films by Peter Greenaway and recently achieved global success with music for Jane Campion's prizewinning film "The Piano". TRACK 12: Here's To The Next One SHIZURU OHTAKA * JAPAN Multi-voiced female singer - her music is a profound yet delightful blend of traditional Asian music and modern synthesizer-based pop music. TRACK 24: One Cell PEADAR O'RIADA * IRELAND Son of Irish folk hero Sean O'Riada (who single-handedly revitalised Irish folk music and was responsible for the formation of The Chieftains, Ireland's premiere folk music ensemble). Continues his fathers work by blending Irish traditional folk/choral music with synthesizers. His compositions are featured on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. TRACK 43: Seascad Siocand I Dtreo Millennium ISAO OSADA * JAPAN One of the new breed of young jazz/funk musicians. When he performs, Osada's trumpet is transformed into extraordinary orchestral textures by the creative use of digital effects units. TRACK 21: A Un HERMETO PASCOAL * BRAZIL An extraordinary multi-instrumentalist and composer who has collaborated with Miles Davis (as player and composer) and has been described as "the Frank Zappa of Brazil". TRACK 25: Feira De Asakusa PENGUIN CAFE ORCHESTRA * U.K. Ethnic/ambient group whose unique music was released on Brian Eno's Obscure label in the late 70's. In the 90's have been involved with Peter Gabriel's "Recording Week" collaborations. TRACK 23: A Pythagorean Roll PIANO CIRCUS * U.K. In the forefront of the recent phenomenon of hip young modern classical groups; performed in 1994 with Vladimir Ashkenazy and plan to work with Arvo Part. TRACK 19: Red JILL PURCE * U.K. Spiritual counselor specialising in ancient chant. Married to Rupert Sheldrake, one of the world's leading post-Einstein scientists. TRACK 15: The Healing Voice GEOFFREY RICHARDSON * U.K. Viola player with Penguin Cafe Orchestra and with Bob Geldof (the man behind Band Aid). TRACK 41: The Lighthouse TERRY RILEY * U.S.A. The founder of minimal music whose "In C" is a classic of the genre; he influenced most of the later minimalists (Glass, Reich, etc.).and has recorded with John Cale and the Kronos Quartet. TRACK 11: A Dog Barks At Midnight MICHAEL SHRIEVE * U.S.A. Powerhouse drummer with the original Santana band. He has in recent years moved into spiritual/ambient/world music. TRACK 34: Invisible Guides JANE SIBERRY * CANADA One of Canada's most eloquent and sensitive female songwriters. Has been produced by Brian Eno and Michael Brook. Is now single-handedly running her internet record/book publishing company. TRACK 36: The Narrow Bridge LAURIE SPIEGEL * U.S.A. One of the leading female musicians active in the area of computer music, she brings a warm sensitivity to this high-tech genre. Invented the hugely successful interactive program Music Mouse. TRACK 37: Soundtrack For Sandin TANANAS * SOUTH AFRICA One of the few multi-ethnic bands from South Africa to make an impact on the international music scene, blending jazz, rock and ethnic music. Their brilliant drummer has played with Sting and Paul Simon. TRACK 32: Ashtanga KLAUS TRABITSCH * AUSTRIA A folk guitarist and singer, Klaus produces warm yet eccentric music, often recorded in the open air in his little village nestling in the Tyrolean mountains, utilising steel drums, wineglasses, synthesizers and dogs. TRACK 9: Jodler TRANS GLOBAL UNDERGROUND * U.K. Pioneers of the world/dance movement, they were one of the first artists to blend high-tech sampling rhythms with ethnic vocals and instruments from a variety of cultures, both in the studio and in their spectacular live performances. TRACK 53: Dead Dog Of Kairouan KOMITAS VARDAPET * ARMENIA (1869-1935) Priest, singer, ethno-musicologist who collected and organised over 4000 folk tunes and died tragically by his own hand. This track is a rare recording, and one of the earliest, made in 1912 on an acoustic cylinder. TRACK 50: Gutan Yerg WOOF WOOF * U.S.A.
