MOTT THE HOOPLE discography
- the fake Mott The Hoople albums
K-Tel released a CD called "The Best Of Mott The Hoople" in 1996 which contained re-recordings of Mott's hits by a bogus band. The cover however wrongly stated that the re-recordings were made by Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson shortly before Mick died. Two years later K-Tel were found guilty in the UK courts on two counts of supplying a CD with a false description and fined £8000 plus £1488 costs. Although BBC TV and several leading British national newpapers reported from the courtcase, this hasn't stopped other companies from releasing the very same album.
The other editions may have dropped the Ian/Mick reference, but they all claim to be Mott The Hoople recordings - which they are not of course. In 2002, a CD entitled "I Can't Believe It's Not Mott the Hoople" surfaced - this was actually another variation of the fake CD but for the first time the cover states that the songs are re-recordings by a band called The Trybe. In 2009 the songs made their debut as download mp3 files at the many online vendors. They can not be stopped, it seems!
